불닭 (Buldak) breaks down into two Korean words: 불 (bul) meaning fire, and 닭 (dak) meaning chicken. 볶음면 (bokkeum myeon) means stir-fry noodles. So the full name is: fire chicken stir-fry noodles. It's not a metaphor or a marketing claim — it's a literal description of what's in the bowl.
The product was created by Samyang Foods (삼양식품) in 2012, inspired by the Korean street food tradition of 불닭 — chicken marinated in a fiery gochujang and chilli paste, traditionally sold at pojangmacha (포장마차), the covered street food stalls that light up Korean cities at night.
Why It Went Viral 왜 유명해졌나
The Spicy Noodle Challenge began circulating on YouTube and social media in the mid-2010s. The format was simple: eat a bowl of original Buldak, film your reaction, post it. Millions of people did. The combination of extreme heat, the visible suffering, and the fact that it was genuinely delicious despite the punishment made for compelling content.
But the viral moment didn't create the product's success — it amplified it. Buldak was already popular in South Korea before the challenge. What the internet did was introduce it to people in 140+ countries who had no access to Korean grocery shops. Amazon became the route to purchase.
Samyang Foods reported that international exports of Buldak products increased dramatically following the viral challenge period — from a minor revenue line to a significant export category. The Korean government has cited Buldak as an example of food Hallyu (한류) — the global wave of Korean cultural influence that has spread through K-pop, K-drama, and increasingly, K-food.
